Exchange 2010 SP1 Preview

In a blog entry posted Wednesday, Microsoft offered a glimpse of what will be in the first major update of Exchange Server 2010, due later this year.

Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) will bring a range of new features and capabilities to the back office mail server software, including improvements to the software’s archiving functionality and to its Web client, according to the blog entry posted by Exchange developer Michael Atalla.

Improvements are splits in four categories :

  1. Archiving and discover
  2. Outlook Web App
  3. Mobile users and managment
  4. Add of some GUI for specific administrations tasks
    • Create/configure Retention Tags + Retention Policies in EMC
    • Configure Transport Rules in ECP
    • Configure Journal Rules in ECP
    • Configure MailTips in ECP
    • Provision and configure the Personal Archive in ECP
    • Configure Litigation Hold in ECP & EMC
    • Configure Allow/Block/Quarantine mobile device policies in ECP
    • RBAC role management in ECP
    • Configure Database Availability Group (DAG) IP Addresses and Alternate Witness Server in EMC
    • Recursive public folder settings management (including permissions) in EMC

    The update will allow users to set up an archive folder that could be located in a mailbox separate from the primary mailbox, which could better help administrators keep their main e-mail databases at manageable sizes.

    The browser client, called Outlook Web Access (OWA), will get some significant new features with this release as well. The client may seem faster to end-users, thanks to its ability to “pre-fetch” messages and run multiple operations simultaneously, according to the blog post.

    The OWA user interface has been reordered for greater readability as well. And, for the first time, OWA users can read and compose messages protected by Microsoft’s information rights management (IRM) technology, a feature previously available only in the regular Outlook client.

    The release will also bring enhancements in the administrative interfaces and searching capabilities. It will also roll up all the features and bug fixes since the first release of Exchange 2010.

    A beta of SP1 will be made available in June, during the company’sTechEd conference.

    Office 2010 set to be released on June 15

    Paul Thurrott made the comments in his weekly WinInfo short takes where he stated “Office 2010 for Windows, meanwhile, will become generally available June 15, 2010.” Microsoft recently released a release candidate version of Office 2010 to technical beta testers. According to company insiders, the software giant plans to Release to Manufacturing (RTM) Office 2010 by the end of March/early April.

    The professional edition will retail for $499 boxed.  Office 2010 will be released in at least five different flavours, including a free version that includes Microsoft Word and Excel, but comes with limited functionality and includes advertisements. The editions of Office 2010 will include Starter, Home and Student, Home and Business, Professional and Professional Academic.

    Microsoft also revealed that customers who purchase Office 2007 between March 5, 2010 and September 30, 2010 will receive a free upgrade copy to Office 2010.

    Microsoft roadmap has Windows 8 shipping in 2011

    A new discovery of a recently-departed Microsoft employee’s blog has revealed a rough version of Microsoft’s roadmap for key software, including Windows 8 (PDF). If a reflection of Microsoft’s tentative plans, it would have Windows 8 released to manufacturing (RTM) on July 1st, 2011, or just two years after Windows 7 was finished. Windows Server 2012 and Office 2012 would ship a year and a day later on July 2nd, 2012.

    The posting would hint at Microsoft speeding up the development process for the next version of Windows. Although Windows 7 brought Microsoft back on track after Vista’s delays and had it ship less than three years later, the company has rarely timed significant upgrades so closely. Windows ME was shipped two years after Windows 98 but has widely been seen as an emergency stopgap following delays in what would become Windows XP.

    While the release window is likely to change, it hints at a less aggressive update than Windows 7 and also that the company is eager to close the gap with competitors like Apple, which in the interval between Vista and 7 released two significant Mac OS X updates. [via Microsoft Kitchen]

    Operating System Requirements of SharePoint 2010

    I’ve read a lot of things on the newsgroups and the web on the versions and editions of Windows that SharePoint 2010 can support. Seems some point must be clarify and MS Sharepoint Team has done a post regarding this.

    So in a first time we must remember SharePoint 2010 will support only 64-bit (x64) versions of Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2.  SharePoint will not install at all on 32 bit Windows, or any earlier version (no 2000 or 2003)

    Moreover SharePoint 2010 is not supported on ‘Server Core’ installations of Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2. The reason give by MS SharePoint team is : “Server Core installations of Windows server do not contain some of the components required for SharePoint to be configured or run“.

    However  it is possible to install SharePoint on 64-bit versions of Windows Vista SP2  and Windows 7 (for developer). But running production environments on these OSes are not supported and it will not be possible to upgrade deployments running on client versions of Windows to future versions of SharePoint (source MS Sharepoint Team).

    SQL Server Migration Assistant for MySQL

    Microsoft has released the first CTP of a SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) for MySQL v1.0, which automates aspects of the migration process to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 & 2008 (including SQL Azure DB).

    SQL Server Migration Assistant for MySQL is the newest migration toolkit. The toolkits were designed to simplify the complex manual process to migrate databases and reduce manual tasks. Using a such tool will significantly reduce the time to migrate, costs and risks associated with migrating.

    At Code403 we have used in the past SSMAs for Oracle and access successfully. We are thinking those tools are the best way to move to Microsoft SQL Server.

    SQL Server Migration Assistant for MySQL v1.0 should be available in the summer of 2010 as a free toolkit. The CTP is available today for download and preview at SSMA 2008 for MySQL v1.0 CTP1.

      Nice tool to manage Windows 2008 R2

      Windows 2008 R2 is coming with nice managments tools. But sometimes it is not enought. So at Code403 we are using a free opensource software to manage many things (Drivers, DCPromo, share,…)

      This tool is Core Configurator and the version 2.0 is now available.

      “It is built and designed for Windows Server 2008 R2 Core edition!

      It is completely open source so it can be amended and change to fit your requirements, this version has been a year in the making and has been written in powershell with a reference to Winforms so that a GUI format is displayed.

      Windows 8 RoadMap annonce

      Well, even if nothing has been annonce about Windows 8 server at PDC 2009, it seems some annonces have been done to partners… well, An interesting Microsoft product roadmap has turned up. The information is consistent with all previsous roadmaps: the year 2012 could be a tentative timeframe for a “major release” code named Windows 8.
      This would put it at about three years out from the release of Windows 7. The interval between Vista and Win 7 was also three years.

      So, if this image is to be believed we won’t have to deal with upgrading our Microsoft-driven computers for another three years. This release date would be consistent with the schedule Microsoft but we’ll have to wait and see what Microsoft can cook up in another three years.

      Perhaps the whole, “end-of-the-world” thing in 2012 really has something to do with Windows 8 :-)
